James Hodgkinson

I am a qualified counsellor with a BSc (Hons) degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy accredited by Staffordshire University.

I have experience working with adults and young people, both short-term and long-term clients.

I studied integrative counselling at Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, and my rationale for practice is underpinned by the core conditions of the Person-centred approach: Empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard, and Congruence. When working with clients, I integrate appropriate techniques from Gestalt theory, including the empty-chair approach and the here-and-now technique, and work with transference and countertransference to help deepen the therapeutic relationship.

I am passionate about assisting people in addressing issues affecting their lives and am keen to use my counselling skills in this way. The presenting problems have included relationship issues, bereavement of family members, historical domestic abuse, including rape and problems around unsocial behaviours. Issues at work, feeling stuck, issues relating to anxiety and self-esteem, and self-harming.

I have also attended training in Counselling Young People and completed a Suicide awareness course.

I am a member of the BACP and the ACC. I hold a DBS certificate and Holistic Insurance.
